The Student's Uprising

Project type

Mixed Media

Date

Oct 2024

Location

Boston, MA

I began construction of this piece during the end of encampments and finished it the day after Trump was elected. This piece is incredibly dense with meaning. Often overlooked, the shape of the collage resembles the mihrab of a prayer mat.
The prominent colors used throughout belong to the Palestinian flag; white of anti-war, socialist newspapers and literature (gathered over 8 months of attending protests), red of NO WAR (found during the first March on DC where the s0-renamed ‘Freedom Plaza’ was flooded with tens of thousands of agitated and aggrieved) and poppies, green of the foliage that will regrow after the end of the genocide, and black of state cop uniforms (as they overwhelm the anti-war students of Columbia in their newly liberated bloc of the West and East main lawn.)
At the top of the piece, representing the top of the mihrab and pointing toward Mecca – a common , is a banner with “Intifada” painted in red, that hung from the window of the moments-before-taken-over Hamilton Hall. Out of nearby window, a banner unfurled renaming the building “Hind’s Hall”
The base of the piece is solely students and masses, with presidential candidate and speaker of the socialist movement, Cornell West, standing above the young, eager, righteous crowd.
